Audition Call – who? hú 狐

Who? Spirit Production and Yu Theatre Toronto are seeking performers for the 2026 Toronto Fringe production of who? hú 狐, a new play by Antong Xu.

who? hú 狐 is a bilingual play set in the aftermath of a shattered world. In a cave on the edge of survival, two immigrants struggle to protect the fragile life they have built together. When a mysterious stranger arrives — a fox that may be more than a fox — the boundaries between human and animal, trust and hunger, myth and violence begin to dissolve.


Roles


HAMZA

Character description: Genuine and grounded. A 1.5 generation immigrant. Hamza is from a place where someone could be named Hamza.

Playing age: 20–30

Performer requirements:

  • Open to performers of any gender

  • Preferably a speaker whose mother tongue is neither English nor French

  • Preferably a BIPOC artist

  • Cultural background from a place where the name “Hamza” would be plausible or common


C

Character description: A Chinese / Chinese diasporic immigrant woman. Living in her own world.

Playing age: 25–50

Performer requirements: 

  • Chinese / Chinese diasporic performer

  • Mother tongue is Mandarin

  • Fluent in English


Production Details

Performance dates: July 2–11, 2026

Venue: Tarragon Theatre Mainspace, Toronto


Compensation

$100 CAD guaranteed honorarium, plus box office share


Rehearsals

Rehearsals begin May 10, 2026.

The schedule will not exceed 12 hours per week.

Rehearsals will generally take place on one weekday evening and one weekend day from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM every week.

All rehearsals will take place in Native Earth Performing Arts (585 Dundas St E, Toronto, ON M5A 2B7).


How to Audition

To request audition sides, please email director Daisy Jia at daisy.jia@yutheatre.com by April 28, 2026.

Auditions will be submitted by self-tape. Please submit your audition self tape to Daisy Jia as well.

We will accept the self tape until May 1st.

Phone recordings are welcome.

If needed, callbacks will be held on May 3, 2026.
