Mission Statement

Yu Theatre is a Toronto-based performance company dedicated to telling stories rooted in the Chinese-speaking world—not only in language but in lived experience.

We create work that draws from the cultural and historical contexts of Chinese-speaking regions and communities, presented in Chinese, English, or other languages. Our goal is to explore and expand the possibilities of theatre rooted in Chinese-speaking contexts within a contemporary, global setting.

Vision

To become a leading voice for theatre rooted in Chinese-speaking contexts — bold, multilingual, and globally engaged — grounded in Toronto's intercultural landscape.

In a city where diasporic histories collide and reimagine themselves daily, Yu Theatre seeks to redefine Chinese cultural storytelling through work that is both locally grounded and globally resonant.

What We Do

  • Stage classic and contemporary works for local Chinese-speaking communities, and to share them with the world.

  • Develop and produce original works that emerge from the realities of Chinese-speaking contexts — whether linguistic, geographic, or diasporic.

  • Support artists who engage with the Chinese world critically and creatively, beyond state narratives and cultural stereotypes.

  • Foster an inclusive, intercultural creative community.

What Makes Us Different

We bring works from the Chinese-speaking world to Toronto audiences through translation, surtitles, and careful adaptation — not to exoticize them, but to share their full cultural and aesthetic richness.

We reject Orientalism. We reject simplification. Our work invites all audiences into the complexity and beauty of the Chinese cultural experience.

We do not aim to divide.
We create space for contradiction, dialogue, and nuance. Yu Theatre does not speak for any ideology — we speak for artistic integrity.

Above all, we believe in art as a unifying force.
Yu Theatre seeks to build new bridges within and beyond the Chinese community through the shared space of performance.
